Pet FAQs

Enjoying walks with your pets is a great way to get out and enjoy all that Algonquin has to offer. Pets are welcome throughout the Village's parks, trails, and parkways. Pet owners should be mindful of others and aware of requirements for pets within the Village. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Village's furry friends. dog

Where must pets be leashed?

Dogs taken to public parks or walked in pedestrian parkways must be restrained appropriately with a leash no longer than 10 feet in length.

When used properly, leashes can prevent your pet from chasing animals, people, and cyclists; provide confidence to their pet owners and park users; and, give pet owners control to protect their animal from dangers.

Pets kept on private property must be contained to the confines of the pet owners property at all times.

Do I have to clean up after my pets?

YES.

How does cleaning up after my pet help our community?

Waste from your pet contains fecal coliform bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Water that contacts waste before entering the ground from storms, snowmelt, and irrigation systems can bring these bacteria into the water we drink. Animals, humans, and objects may also contact these bacteria in areas where waste is left on the ground.

Runoff that enters the wastewater system can also carry pet waste into local watersheds. When pet waste is decomposed, oxygen is removed from the water and harms aquatic life.

Here are some tips you can follow to proactively protect our community:

  • Be prepared. Bring one or two bags with you when you walk your pet or take your pet to a park. Bagged waste should be placed in the trash. If there is not a refuse container to deposit the waste in, tie the bag to the leash and dispose when the next opportunity arrives.
  • Be responsible. Dispose of your pet’s waste from your yard in a timely manner. Pet waste should never be composted or used as fertilizer. Never dispose of pet waste on streets, sidewalks, or in storm drains.
  • Spread the word. Encourage other pet owners to dispose of their pet’s waste responsibly.

How many pets can I have?

No more than four domestic animals - dogs, cats, or other allowed animals - may be kept at any residential property within the Village.

Do I need to register my pets?

The Village of Algonquin does not require pet licensing; however, Kane and McHenry counties do require valid rabies tags for all dogs. In most cases, the veterinarian's office administering vaccination will have all the necessary information on obtaining the rabies tags from the appropriate county. You can also find more information on tags at the county websites provided below.
