Souwanas Trail Project Receives Regional Award
The Village of Algonquin is proud to announce that the Souwanas Trail Improvements Project has been awarded the Project of the Year in the Transportation ($5 million - $25 million) category by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Fox Valley Branch. The award recognizes outstanding public works projects that demonstrate excellence in management, planning, and engineering.
The Souwanas Trail Improvements Project was a transformative effort aimed at improving roadway conditions, infrastructure resilience, and pedestrian connectivity. The project included:
- Roadway rehabilitation with full-depth reclamation, cement stabilization, and new asphalt pavement.
- Sanitary sewer upgrades to support future development east of the Fox River.
- Culvert installation at Souwanas Creek to improve drainage and reduce environmental impact.
- Safety improvements with a narrowed road, curb and gutter, and continuous sidewalks for traffic calming and pedestrian access.
“The Souwanas Trail Project is a great example of how thoughtful improvements enhance quality of life while strengthening the resilience of Algonquin’s infrastructure,” said Village President Debby Sosine. “We are proud to see it recognized for its positive impact on the community.”
This award follows last month’s recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois, which honored the project for its engineering achievements. Following this recent award, the project will now be under consideration for additional recognition at various levels of APWA. These accolades highlight the Village’s commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure improvements that benefit the community.
