The Village of Algonquin, IL

The Village of Algonquin is proud to share that two projects have been honored with the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL) Special Achievement Award.

Old Town Algonquin Project: Riverwalk and Streetscape Project and Washington and Harrison Street Project – The Riverwalk and Streetscape Project in Old Town Algonquin, recognized in the public engagement and communications category, has significantly transformed the downtown area, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment while enhancing the Village's historic charm. This multi-phase initiative focused on improving walkways, access to the river, and modernizing public spaces while minimizing disruptions to local businesses and residents.

Souwanas Trail Improvements – The Souwanas Trail Improvements project, recognized in the transportation category, upgraded the roadway by converting it from a rural to an urban cross-section, including new concrete curbs, sidewalk connections, and expanded underground utility infrastructure. These improvements address flooding issues, reduce impervious surfaces, provide enhanced utility capacity, and improve safety along the trail, benefiting both the community and the surrounding environment.

"The Riverwalk and Streetscape project is an important step in continuing the transformation of Old Town into a vibrant and welcoming downtown, while the Souwanas Trail Improvements have significantly enhanced the infrastructure and safety of the area.”

The ACEC-IL presents awards annually to projects that showcase exceptional planning, design, and execution. This year’s awards highlight the continued efforts of the Village of Algonquin to improve its infrastructure. In 2023, the Village’s Main Street Reconstruction Project received the ACEC-IL Honor Award.
