Algonquin Named Tree City USA for 28th Consecutive Year
The Village of Algonquin has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for its continued commitment to effective urban forest management. This year’s recognition marks the 28th consecutive year Algonquin has received this designation and the third consecutive year it has received the Growth Award.
The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation along with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, sets the standards to effectively manage urban forests. To qualify, communities must maintain a dedicated tree board or department, enforce a tree-care ordinance, commit at least $2.00 per capita annually to forestry, and observe Arbor Day—criteria Algonquin consistently exceeds.
Moreover, the Growth Award honors communities that promote sustainable urban forest management. Last year, Illinois ranked second nationally with 200 Tree City USA communities and first for the most Growth Awards, with 107 recipients. This highlights the commitment of Illinois communities to urban forestry, especially since only about 15% of Tree City USA communities nationwide receive the Growth Award.

Communities recognized as Tree City USA enjoy numerous benefits, such as improved air quality, enhanced storm water management, and annual energy savings. Additionally, these areas often experience increased property values and a boost in commercial activities.
Algonquin remains committed to promoting the importance of trees and the natural environment within the community. Last year, the Village's Public Works department, which staffs eight certified arborists, removed 248 trees, planted 312, and trimmed 4,370 as part of their annual maintenance program.
